When Orko breaks an ancient stone statue while trying to help Stanlan dust the antiquities, an ancient map is found inside. They take it to the Sorceress, who tells them the map leads through the Caves of the Wind to the Temple of the Wolf, where the Ancients' Book of Spells is hidden inside a statue of a wolf. Skeletor is already listening in, tipped off not by Beast Man but by Holly the Hollywag's own chatter, and races the heroes to the temple. Teela closes the episode with a word against jumping to conclusions, and Holly gets the last line.
Teela: "In today's adventure we saw what happens when we make up our minds about something before we have the facts. It's called 'jumping to conclusions' and anyone who does that will usually find that the conclusion is wrong. That's what happened to Melaktha. If he had only... well, hello Holly. Is there something you want to say? Holly: "Yup! Don't jump to conclusions! Don't jump to conclusions!" Teela: "That's good advice. And if anyone asks, just say a little bird told you. See you all soon."
John Erwin as He-Man/Prince Adam and Beast Man
Alan Oppenheimer as Skeletor, Melaktha and Battle Cat/Cringer
Linda Gary as Teela, Stanlan and the Sorceress
Lou Scheimer (credited as Erik Gunden) as Orko, Trap Jaw and Holly the Hollywag
Man-At-Arms also appears throughout this episode; his voice actor is not separately confirmed on file.
"This little bird told us everything." (Skeletor, on how Holly the Hollywag gave the heroes away)
A little bird told them. It is the oldest cover story for gossip there is, a joke about a tiny, deniable messenger, and this episode is unusual among the show's moral-of-the-week endings for actually building its plot around the phrase rather than just reciting it over the closing narration.
Holly the Hollywag starts the episode as a gag: a small flying creature Orko and Stanlan find sealed inside a cursed bottle in the sand, equal parts pet and party trick, happiest when she is repeating whatever she last heard. That habit is played for laughs on the flight out, as she parrots Skeletor's own insults back at him before anyone on screen has worked out what she is for. Only later does the script turn the habit into a plot point. Beast Man snaps at her to keep quiet about the map. By then she has already repeated everything to Skeletor's crew, with no idea what she was doing or to whom. "This little bird told us everything," Skeletor gloats, and the title stops being a pun and starts being the plot. We are watching the episode's real subject here: a side character whose only trait, mimicry without judgment, costs the heroes their secrecy and then saves their mission in the same breath [1].
The structure gets there by way of a fairly ordinary Filmation quest. Orko wrecks a statue while helping Stanlan dust Melaktha's collection, a map tumbles out, and the Sorceress is enlisted to translate a language old enough that she warns Adam it will take time. Skeletor is listening in through Trap Jaw's tracking gear from the opening scene, so by the time He-Man's party reaches the ruins the chase is already a race rather than a mystery. The desert crossing that follows, a stampede of horned creatures, a climbing sequence with Man-At-Arms on a grapple line, a light-filled ritual chamber, is well animated but mostly incidental; strip it out and the episode's actual hinge, the password scene at the statue of the wolf, would lose nothing.
That scene is the episode's best idea. Stanlan has the two secret words and forgets them under pressure, stammering "open sesame" and "open book" while Skeletor jeers from the sidelines. It is Holly, of all the characters on screen, who gets the password right, the same uncritical mimicry that betrayed the group is what retrieves the book before Skeletor can grab it, not a different trait but the same one turned to account. He-Man does get a moment of his own worth noting: with Beast Man cornered and unable to control an animal he has set loose, He-Man trades the animal's safety for a straight answer rather than just winning the fight outright [2]. It is a small beat, but it is a smarter one than the show usually bothers with for a villain this minor.
Where the episode runs thin is the middle stretch at the ruins, which exists mostly to burn time between the ambush and the password. The horned stampede has no stakes attached to it: nobody is hurt, nothing is lost, and the sequence plays as padding dressed up as a set piece. Teela's arrival to report that Stanlan has vanished briefly threatens to be a real complication, since Skeletor claims the boy betrayed them, but He-Man dismisses the idea in a single line and the episode never asks the audience to wonder along with him.
The ending earns its moral more than most. Teela's closing word about jumping to conclusions is aimed at Melaktha, who spends most of the episode assuming the worst of Orko, but it lands harder read against Holly. The one character guilty of blurting out everything without thinking is also the one who comes through when it counts, and "just say a little bird told you" works as both the punchline and the fairest verdict the episode can offer her.
[1] The castAppearances on file for this episode name Alan Oppenheimer as Melaktha and Battle Cat/Cringer and leave Man-At-Arms off the list entirely, despite his screen time ferrying the party and scaling the ruins; corrected here. [2] Trap Jaw's screen presence in this episode is brief, limited to operating Skeletor's tracking gear rather than any direct confrontation with the heroes.
