Robert Lamb moved to Los Angeles in 1976 to break into animation, and by his own account his drawing was not yet good enough to get hired. Filmation artist Robert Kline encouraged him to keep at it, and in 1981 he landed a storyboard job at the studio, working on The New Adventures of Zorro, Blackstar, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and later BraveStarr. Boarding other people’s scripts convinced him he could write better ones, and he crossed over: his name is on He-Man episodes including Capture the Comet Keeper, Into the Abyss, Not So Blind and The Ancient Mirror of Avathar, and on She-Ra’s Loo-Kee Lends a Hand, Micah of Bright Moon and The Eldritch Mist.
He stayed until 1989 and has called 1981 to 1989 “the Golden Years” of his career. Few people at Filmation saw an episode from both ends, as the writer who set it up and the board artist who had to make it work on the page, which makes him an unusually good witness to how the scripts and the boards fed each other. cereal:geek split it into six parts, embedded below in running order.
