Mattel teased a Two-Bad this morning, and Origins already made one

Mattel put a Two-Bad teaser on Mattel Creations this morning, a gunmetal fist and an orange shield. Origins already made one, and it looked nothing like this.

Mattel teased a Two-Bad this morning, and Origins already made one
The Masters of the Universe Origins Two Bad figure, photographed against a purple set: the blue Tuvar head and the purple scaled Baddrah head over one body, a yellow slab chest armour covered in raised domes and studs, a red belt, a gunmetal gauntlet on one arm, and the yellow shield in the other hand. Mattel published these images with the product page on September 18. Product photography: Mattel.

Two-Bad is two people sharing one body, and that has made him awkward to tool since the vintage line first tried it. Mattel has now had two goes at the problem in Origins scale, and a teaser that went up on Mattel Creations this morning points at a third.

The teaser is two macro crops and nothing else: on the left a clenched fist in gunmetal grey on a blue arm, cuffed in a band of raised studs, and on the right the face of a shield in bright orange, filled with raised domes and triangular ridges. Toy Habits read the post and reports that the figure goes on sale on September 23 at 9:00 a.m. PT, with Club Grayskull members buying first, through September 24 at 8:59 a.m. PT.

The tease is Mattel’s own, because the store publishes the name of its live deployment in the page source, and the label sitting on creations.mattel.com for this morning’s 9:00 a.m. PT publish reads CH-9.10 9am MOTU TWO BAD T. [1] The date is a different matter. Mattel’s own launch calendar runs out on Thursday September 17, every slot on it reads COMING SOON with a dollar band and no product name against it, and there is no product page for a new Two-Bad on Creations at all. [2] September 23 rested on Toy Habits and on nothing else we could reach when this went up. A second outlet has run it since, with a price on it.

Updated September 11: a price, and a second outlet on the date

Toy News International ran the tease later on the evening of September 10, under the headline “Mattel Club Grayskull Masters of the Universe Two-Bad Figure Coming September 23rd”, and it has the one thing Toy Habits did not: a price, given as PRICE POINT: $22. The window is there too, to the same minute, in the form Mattel uses on its own product pages: “from September 23, 2026, at 9:00am PT through September 24, 2026, at 8:59am PT, only Club Grayskull members can buy this item at MattelCreations, while supplies last.” [5]

That is a fuller look at the same teaser. It is not a second source. TNI opens on a line that reads like the store’s own teaser copy, “Think your collection can handle twice the terror?”, and runs the window and the price as plain body text underneath it, so the likeliest reading is that both outlets are quoting one Mattel post and one of them quoted more of it. The date still rests on that teaser. The price is new.

TNI’s headline puts Club Grayskull in the product’s name, while the image path it filed the story under reads Masters.of.the.Universe/Origins/Two-Bad. Club Grayskull is also the membership whose 24 hour window the quoted copy describes, so the headline may be naming the window rather than the line. Mattel has not said which.

Mattel has still published nothing. The launch calendar was loaded again this morning: nine slots, the furthest of them Thursday September 17, every one reading COMING SOON with a dollar band and no product name, and no September 23 entry anywhere on it. A store search still returns no Two-Bad beyond the 2024 multipack we go through below, and that one is still sold out. But $22 is the first number anyone has put on this figure. That is Origins single money, not the multipack money. Neither that price nor that hour has appeared on a Mattel page.

Updated September 18: the product page went up, and the title reads Origins

Mattel put the listing on Creations at noon Eastern today, eight days after the teaser. It reads Masters of the Universe Origins Two Bad Figure, the address carries origins in it, and the SKU is JHK20. [6] Club Grayskull governs when you can buy it rather than which line it belongs to: Mattel’s own copy runs the member window to the same minute TNI printed, from September 23 at 9:00am PT through September 24 at 8:59am PT, and the price on the page is $22.00, so the number TNI had was right. The listing is visible and it is not buyable yet.

Nine photographs came up with it. The armour is a slab covered in raised domes and square studs, the belt is red, one gauntlet is gunmetal and the other a coppery red-brown, one boot is silver and the other matches that gauntlet, and the blue Tuvar half is smooth where the purple Baddrah half is scaled from jaw to ankle. One thing we got wrong: the shield is the same colour as the chest armour, and Mattel’s copy calls that colour yellow. We read it as bright orange off a macro crop with nothing beside it to judge against.

The Masters of the Universe Origins Two Bad figure on white with its shield beside it: a blue head and a purple scaled head on one body, a yellow slab chest armour covered in domes and studs, a red belt, a silver gauntlet on the left arm and a coppery red-brown one on the right, one silver boot and one red-brown boot, and a yellow shield carrying the same domes and studs as the armour.

Mattel lists him at five and a half inches with sixteen points of articulation, the shield, and a mini comic, in what the copy calls collector-friendly packaging. [7] The 2024 multipack gave each of its two figures that same height and those same sixteen points, so the reworking the designers described at the July panel, an all-new torso, newly sculpted legs and updated proportions, left the size alone.

A flag in the top corner of the card reads NEW FOR 26, a yellow starburst on the left reads MODERN POSING! RETRO PLAY!, and under the logo he is the Double-Headed Evil Strategist, the billing on the 1985 card in our own archive. The mini comic sits behind the figure in the blister with its title showing through the plastic: The Foes of Fortune.

The carded Two Bad, on vintage-style packaging: a NEW FOR 26 flag in the top corner, the Masters of the Universe logo over a red rock background, the name TWO BAD above the line Double-Headed Evil Strategist, a yellow starburst reading MODERN POSING! RETRO PLAY!, the figure in the blister with its shield, and the mini comic behind it with THE FOES OF FORTUNE showing through.

Updated September 23: the sale opened, and it opened as a backorder

The member window opened at 9:00am PT today and the listing went buyable: $22.00, the button live, and no sell-out in the hours since. Nothing here changes the figure or the price, so there is no second post in it.

One thing the page does not tell you in its body copy. The order is a backorder rather than stock, and the hidden field behind the variant carries 11-13-2026, which Creations renders as a ship-on-or-before line. So a member buying inside today’s window is buying a November figure. The same field is what turned the Hot Wheels Transformers Bumblebee sale from what looked like stock into a backorder running to 2027, and it is worth checking on any Creations listing before you decide how soon a thing arrives.

Club Grayskull members have him to themselves until September 24 at 8:59am PT, after which the listing opens to everyone.

Origins already made a Two Bad

The line got there already. The Masters of the Universe Origins Two Bad Multipack went out on Creations at $50.00 under Mattel’s own SDCC 2024 tag. It is sold out on Mattel’s store today.

It did not give you Two-Bad, though. It gave you Tuvar and Baddrah as two complete 5.5 inch figures with sixteen points of articulation each, plus a spare torso, so that you could stand them on the shelf as a pair of arguing henchmen or pull them apart and build the merged body yourself.

The contents of the Masters of the Universe Origins Two Bad Multipack laid out on white: a spare half blue, half purple torso in orange armour, the blue Tuvar figure with silver studded gauntlets, the purple Baddrah figure with red gauntlets, and the Mirror of Avathar in a gold frame.

Everything in the 2024 multipack, including the spare torso that lets you assemble the merged figure and the Mirror of Avathar. Product photography: Mattel.

Look at what it was wearing, because the 2024 deco is cartoon deco throughout. Orange armour, yes, but a cartoon orange, moulded in one piece across a chest that runs bright blue on one side and violet on the other, over silver briefs on Tuvar and crimson ones on Baddrah. The box says CARTOON COLLECTION along the bottom in rainbow letters, the front art is the animation logo rather than the toy one, and a speech bubble on the side panel reads “SHUT BIG TRAP BEFORE I SHUT TRAP FOR YOU!”. It is a lovely thing, and every bit of it is drawn from the cartoon!

The SDCC slide showed a vintage-deco Two-Bad

At the Masters of the Universe panel this July, Mattel put a Two-Bad on the screen with a starburst beside it reading “Totally retro!”, and the figure on that slide is dressed like the vintage toy rather than the cartoon: a slab chest plate in the yellow-orange family, a red belt, one translucent red boot against one in silver, and a shield in the hand. Toy Habits, reporting the panel, has Mattel’s designers calling it reworked with an all-new torso, newly sculpted legs and updated proportions, and coming with a new mini-comic. [3]

Now put the teaser next to it. The vintage figure is item 9040, sold on a card that calls him the double-headed evil strategist and promises that you can “make his arms do a crushing bear hug”, and his chest armour is a slab of orange plastic covered in raised domes and square studs, with a shield in the blister carrying the same domes and studs. The shield in this morning’s teaser has those domes and those ridges. Where the 2024 Tuvar’s gauntlet was bright silver, the fist in the teaser is a dull gunmetal, with the studs still sitting on the cuff.

The two crops in Mattel's teaser, side by side: a gunmetal clenched fist on a blue arm with a studded cuff, and a close macro of an orange shield covered in raised domes and triangular ridges.

Mattel’s teaser, in full. Two crops, no figure, and no date on the image itself. Image: Mattel.

Both crops fit the vintage deco. The SDCC slide was wearing it; the 2024 multipack was not. [4]

What you can buy while you wait

BigBadToyStore still has no Origins Two-Bad listing, and the one on Mattel’s own store cannot be bought until the 23rd. What is buyable today is the Masterverse New Eternia Two-Bad, the larger collector-scale one, in stock and marked down to $26.39 from a $32.99 list, and it arrives carrying an axe, a mace and a shield of its own.

Two other Evil Warriors are in stock in the Cartoon Collection deco, if that is the shelf you are building: Tri-Klops at $12.99 against a $19.99 list, and Invisible Skeletor at $19.99. The Skeletor and Screech two-pack sits at $29.99 with a live add to cart.

The date held, and this is the second Club Grayskull window in a fortnight, after King Hiss on September 2, and it lands three days after the fourteen Creations exclusives that turned up at BigBadToyStore yesterday go on selling without Mattel. Creations sells these in a fixed window and does not always restock. The page is up now, so the thing left to watch is the clock: noon Eastern on the 23rd, members first.

Sources

[1]: A Shopify store publishes the name of its live theme in the page source, and Mattel uses that field as a dated deployment label. It records what went up and when, and it carries no price and no launch date, so it corroborates the tease and nothing else about it. [2]: The calendar is drawn in the browser rather than served in the page, so it has to be read with one rendered. Ours showed nine slots, two of them on September 17, and it has never resolved a slot after the fact. [3]: That description is Toy Habits reporting the panel. Mattel has published no product copy for this figure, because there is no product page for it yet. [4]: The 2024 box does say its pack-out poses pay homage to the vintage figure’s action feature, so the vintage toy was already in the room. The colours were not. [5]: The “twice the terror” line, the window and the price all run as plain body copy on TNI rather than as marked quotations, so the wording above is TNI’s as printed. The window matches the form Mattel uses on Creations product pages for every member window drop, including the Masters of the Universe x Transformers Megatron Armor Skeletor listing, which carries the same sentence with its own dates in it. [6]: A Shopify handle is set when the page is created and does not change on its own, and the product data on this one gives a creation date of September 10, hours after the teaser went up. The word origins in it is Mattel’s own from the start. [7]: The copy carries the boilerplate every Creations listing does, that colours and decorations may vary and that purchase limits are subject to change. It carries no per-order cap: the Hot Wheels Transformers Bumblebee put its limit of three on the page and in its product data, and this listing has neither.
