Battle for Subternia gives Origins its rank and file, and the box art is finally out in full

Mattel's Entertainment Earth exclusive four-pack is in stock at $74.99, and the people who drew its packaging have put the full illustrations out. Avion Warrior, Primal Captain, Aquatican Mer-Warrior and Sepult-Ro Disciple are ranks rather than characters, so the set is worth buying more than one of.

Eternia has always been short of extras.

Forty years of Masters of the Universe toys have given us champions, warlords, a sorceress and a man with a cannon where his forearm should be, and almost nobody for any of them to command. Stratos rules Avion, but he has never once had an Avion to rule. Mer-Man holds the oceans from a shelf on which he is the only thing in the ocean. A line built out of characters does that, because a character is what a child asks for by name.

Mattel’s Battle for Subternia four-pack is the correction, and this week it stopped being a pre-order. Entertainment Earth has it in stock at $74.99, item MTJMJ24, shipping in one to three business days. [1] Inside are four figures on the Origins 5.5 inch body, sixteen points of articulation each, six battle accessories between them. Not one of the four is a person.

Four ranks, not four characters

The card backs say so outright. The Avion Warrior’s bio opens “This warrior class provides an essential element to every battle, keeping watch on the field.” The orange one is not the Primal Captain, he is “A Primal Captain”, fighting “for their clan and their alliance with Sepult-Ro’s twisted cult.” The Aquaticans are plural from the first word, undersea masters who fight for Mer-Man rather than beside him.

So the four are an Avion, a beast of the seven tribes, an Aquatican soldier and an acolyte of a cult leader who does not appear in the box. No Mattel multipack in years has been assembled on that principle. One set is four new figures. Three sets is an Avion flight, a beast pack and a skeletal cult. Mattel’s own description calls it an army builder; usually that phrase is cover for a repaint, but here it means what it says.

The Battle for Subternia box front, with the cavern battle artwork across the upper panel and the four figures in a red window tray beneath it, each slot captioned with a name.

What the box says

The upper panel carries a block of story text, and with it Subternia gets a reason to be invaded:

Deep in the dark depths of Subternia, a new evil emerges to threaten peace on Eternia. The mysterious cult leader Sepult-Ro and his disciples join forces with the seemingly lost Seven Tribes beasts to take not only Subternia, but the whole planet.

The threat is to the whole planet, so an Avion and an Aquatican end up in the same tray. Sepult-Ro himself is named, described and not included. He may be a figure Mattel is holding back, or he may be scenery, but the packaging gives no hint either way. [2]

The box back panel, carrying four painted character illustrations in gold banners: Avion Warrior over clouds, Primal Captain in a jungle, Aquatican Mer-Warrior underwater and Sepult-Ro Disciple against green fire.

The artwork

The back of the box is the part that reached collectors this week in high resolution, published by Toy Habits with credit to the art director who designed the package and the artist who painted it. Four illustrations, one per figure, each with its own setting. The Avion Warrior rides above cloud with more of his kind wheeling behind him. The Primal Captain stands under a red sun in twisted jungle. The Mer-Warrior is lit from above through water, with coral and a jellyfish for company, and the Sepult-Ro Disciple holds a staff trailing green fire in a forest of black spines.

The front panel is one long cavern battle rather than four portraits, and there is more happening in it than in the tray below. Toy Habits reads a winged Avion duelling a horned, bat-winged skeletal creature in the upper left, and notes that the same creature was teased on Laser Light Skeletor’s packaging earlier this year. The identification is theirs rather than Mattel’s, and nothing printed on this box names the thing. What is unambiguous is Scare Glow, down in the lower corner of the cavern with his staff, watching a fight he is not in.

Where to get it

There is one place to get it, because the set is an Entertainment Earth exclusive and says so in its own product name. It is listed at $74.99, in stock, with the usual one to three day warehouse window. Our own catalogue entry has been updated to match. The rest of the line is on the MOTU Origins shelf.

Whether they are good figures is a separate question, and a photograph cannot settle it. Mattel has always sold Eternia as a cast list, and this week it sold four people with no names at all.

Notes

  1. Entertainment Earth product page for item MTJMJ24, read 25 October 2026: price $74.99, stock status IN STOCK, “Usually leaves our warehouse in 1-3 business days.” The listing was still showing as a pre-order in our own catalogue until this post.
  2. One oddity in the packaging, visible in Mattel’s own product photography and worth knowing before you open it. The printed nameplates along the bottom of the tray run Avion Warrior, Primal Captain, Aquatican Mer-Warrior, Sepult-Ro Disciple, left to right, but the figures sitting above slots two and four are the other way round: the hooded skeleton stands over the Primal Captain plate and its subtitle “Powerful Beastly Warrior!”, and the orange beast stands over the Sepult-Ro Disciple plate and “Dark Cult Acolyte!”. The card backs pair every name with the right character, so the mismatch is on the front of the tray only.
