The Skelcons are standing in rank on Laser Light Skeletor's card back, behind Blade and Saurod

Mattel's own photograph of the back of the Deluxe Laser Light Skeletor package puts three unannounced 1987 movie characters behind Skeletor. Two of them are single figures. The third is a whole rank of them.

Mattel put nine official photographs of Deluxe Laser Light Skeletor on its own store on 7 October, and the eighth of them is the back of the package. The front sells the figure, with the green skull and the soft goods cape sitting behind the window as they will on the peg. But the back is where Origins has been showing its next figures for two years, in illustration, with nothing about them in the press copy, and this card is busier than most of them.

Three characters stand behind Skeletor in that illustration; none of the three has been announced for Origins. On the left, in studded black armour with a skull plate on his chest and a sword in his right hand, bald and wearing a dark lens over one eye, is Blade. On the right, raising a pistol, armoured reptilian head, pale slit eyes above a clamped mouth plate, is Saurod. Both are from the 1987 film, and neither has ever been promised for the line.

Two details of the card back side by side: on the left Blade, bald with a dark lens over one eye, in studded black armour with a skull plate, holding a sword; on the right Saurod, an armoured reptilian head with pale slit eyes above a clamped mouth plate, raising a pistol.

The third one got into only one of the two Toy Habits posts, and it takes up more of the card than either of the other two. Between Skeletor’s legs, in pale blue and lit from somewhere behind, a rank of horned skull-faced soldiers stands in formation with polearms shouldered, receding into the depth of the frame until the heads stop resolving. Those are the Skelcons, the skeletal infantry from the same film, and you can count at least six of them before the rank runs out of focus. An artist drawing a cameo puts in one.

A detail of the card back: a rank of pale blue soldiers with horned skull faces and shouldered polearms, standing in formation and receding into the background behind Skeletor's legs.

Blade and Saurod are single-figure releases if they ever happen, bought once and put on the shelf, but a rank of identical skeletal soldiers is an army builder, bought four and six at a time, and the line has never had one from the movie side at all.

Toy Habits ran two pieces on this the same afternoon and they do not agree with each other. The 12:41 Eastern post, on the official images, reads the back art as teasing “both Blade and Saurod” and stops there. The 14:41 Eastern post puts the Skelcons in its own headline. Having opened the artwork at full resolution, we would say the second one has it right: the Skelcons are the most prominent of the three rather than the hardest to spot, and the reason they read as background is that Blade has a sword up and Saurod is raising a pistol while the rank behind them stands still. The outlet also makes the point that this card has form: it notes Eldor turning up on the Snake Lair box and Laser Light Skeletor himself on the Camo Khan card back, both ahead of release.

What Mattel will say out loud is narrower. Its own Instagram post the same morning is about the figure in the window, not the art behind it, in the same plain register it used when a whole Core wave went up on its own shelf a week ago: “Originally released only in Europe with super limited distribution, Laser Light Skeletor returns with upgraded Origins posability and modern detailing.” Nothing about Blade, nothing about Saurod, and nothing about the soldiers behind them.

The figure itself, which we covered when the date first landed, goes up on 12 October at 9:00am PT for Club Grayskull members, with everyone else admitted on 13 October at the same hour, at $33.00. The product record reads available: false tonight. The drop has not happened yet. [1]

Laser Power He-Man, the other half of this pairing and the figure fighting Skeletor on that card back, is orderable now. BigBadToyStore has him at $27.99 on pre-order with the add to cart control live. Mattel Creations has him in stock today at $33.00. [2]

[1] Read off the Mattel Creations product JSON rather than the rendered page, which geolocates to Canadian dollars from here. Item JHK22, nine images, tagged MC_Exclusive, product record created 2 October and published 7 October at 11:00 Central.

[2] BigBadToyStore does not carry Laser Light Skeletor and is unlikely to: it is a Creations exclusive. A search of the store this evening returned eight Skeletor products and none of them this one. The $30.99 row on the Laser Power He-Man listing is the Mint Pro packaging tier of the same figure, not a different item.
