Search for the Past

Official Synopsis

Search for the Past synopsis still

A bracelet bearing King Miro's crest turns up at the market, found abandoned in the Swamps of Enchantment, and the possibility that King Randor's long-vanished father might still be alive sends Randor and Man-At-Arms off to investigate. Man-At-Arms suspects the swamps mean the Enchantress is involved, and the clues lead them toward old stories about a prisoner held on a mountain that floats above the swamp.

The Enchantress, watching them the whole time through an owl's eyes, sweeps Randor away to her stronghold, Castle Fear, and throws Man-At-Arms from their boat. Adam and Cringer track them down and become He-Man and Battle Cat, and a makeshift catapult launches He-Man up onto the floating mountain, where he finds an aged King Miro living as the Enchantress's prisoner and fighting off a dangerous creature called the Lurker.

After freeing Miro and getting them both safely down to the swamp, He-Man and his allies storm Castle Fear, where the Enchantress's giant servant Drude is talked into turning against his mistress once Miro and Randor convince him she'll discard him the moment he's no longer useful. Rather than let Drude mistreat the Enchantress in turn, He-Man persuades him to show some restraint of his own.

With father and son finally reunited, and Adam introduced to his grandfather for the first time, Miro decides to spend some time rediscovering Eternia before settling back into palace life, holding onto the bracelet that started the whole search as a keepsake.

Morals by Spoken by Orko at the episode's close

Well, you know what I like best in today's story? Well, there were three things. First, was when the Enchantress found out you can't do bad things without being punished for them. The second thing was when King Randor found his father. But what I liked best of all was Adam and his grandfather getting together. Grandfathers and grandmothers are very special people, and they give their grandchildren a very special kind of love. So, if you're lucky enough to have a grandmother or a grandfather, or maybe even both, well, you're really especially lucky.

heman.org Episode Review

Every family in Eternia keeps a secret, and "Search for the Past" is the episode that finally admits it. King Randor has spent two seasons hiding nothing more interesting than a council schedule from his own household, but here the show reveals his father kept the biggest secret of all: he was alive, trapped on a floating mountain, for the length of Randor's entire reign. Prince Adam, whose own double life has been the show's running joke all along, spends this episode chasing a man whose disappearance mirrors his own method of hiding, present in name and absent in person, found only when someone finally goes looking. The episode never spells this out, but it does not need to. By the time He-Man kneels in front of a king he has never met, the parallel between grandfather and grandson, both missing from their own families on purpose or otherwise, has already done its own work.

The mechanics that get him there are standard-issue mid-season Filmation: a bracelet that turns up in the right peddler's stall, an expedition timed to interrupt before it can succeed, a villain whose magic exists mostly to manufacture obstacles on a schedule. Misty Stewart and Larry DiTillio's script does not try to disguise any of that. What it spends its real attention on is the handoff: Randor to Duncan, Duncan to Adam, Adam to He-Man, each one picking up the search right where the last one left off, so the episode plays less like a rescue and more like a relay. The Enchantress is a thinner villain than the premise deserves, mostly a voice from a glowing portrait and a pair of borrowed monsters, but Linda Gary plays her with enough contempt for He-Man's reputation, "he's trouble, big trouble," that we believe she means it.

The best scene in the episode is not a fight. It is King Miro, alone on his mountain for longer than he can count, asking a stranger in a fur loincloth whether he is really Randor's son, and getting an answer. Lou Scheimer voices both Miro and Randor, and on the page that doubling plays as the same bloodline speaking two different ages of the same disbelief. The episode could have cut straight to the rescue once that scene lands. Instead it makes He-Man carry Miro down the mountain the hard way, past a frost-breathing Lurker and a castle nobody can see from the ground, as if the writers wanted the reunion to cost something before it paid off.

The weak link is Drude. He spends the episode as the Enchantress's cringing errand-runner, gets threatened once by his own master, and switches sides inside a single scene on nothing sturdier than He-Man telling him cruelty is beneath him. It needs to work as both a joke and a turn, since Drude is the one who frees Randor from his cell, and it only manages the first. A line or two earlier hinting that his loyalty was never solid would have made the flip feel earned instead of convenient.

Where the episode lands, finally, is on the quietest beat all year: Adam slipping away to come back as himself, so his grandfather can meet Prince Adam rather than He-Man. Every other episode this year treats the secret identity as a problem to manage; here, for thirty seconds, we get to watch it work as a gift instead.

[1] Drude's introduction, voiced by Alan Oppenheimer under the same actor already playing Man-At-Arms and Battle Cat, plays the character as comic relief first. The Enchantress calls him a "bothersome insect" before he does anything insect-like, and that joke is the only setup his late turn gets.

Notes of Interest

  1. Behind the scenes: Script was approved May 21, 1984 and final script revision took place September 17, 1984. It was previously hinted in the episode The Rainbow Warrior that Queen Marlena knows Adam is He-Man. It is hinted again in this episode when, worried about Man-At-Arms and her husband, she asks Adam to go after them. King Miro's story continues in She-Ra: Princess of Power, in the episode King Miro's Journey.
  2. The Enchantress, Drude and the Lurker were designed by character artist Charles Zembillas, who also designed the Bibbit characters for this story, but they went unused until the She-Ra: Princess of Power episodes The Bibbet Story and Swifty's Baby. This story was released on VHS in the UK together with Revenge is Never Sweet and One for All.
  3. Continuity: The interior backgrounds of Castle Fear were used earlier as those of Spydra's castle in The Return of Orko's Uncle and will be seen again inside Castle Landros in Bargain with Evil. The animation of He-Man leaping and grabbing onto a ledge will be used again in Visitors from Earth. Many of the creatures that appear in this story will be seen again as the Wizard of the Tree's magical creations in the She-Ra: Princess of Power episode The Reluctant Wizard. The design of the Sludge Creatures would later be re-purposed for the one-shot villain Ore Captain Sludge Man in the She-Ra: Princess of Power episode Day of the Flowers.
  4. Animation errors and goofs: In the opening scene, when Orko picks a fruit, the scene changes but part of the fruits in the background remain in the exact same position. When the Peddler is first seen in a wide shot at his market stall, he is wearing a dark blue tunic with light blue stripes, but in a closer shot, the shirt is light blue with dark blue stripes. He-Man throws his sword several yards away at the giant snowball to fight off the Lurker. When he rescues Miro shortly after, the sword suddenly reappears in his scabbard with him having no opportunity to retrieve it.
